TERRY SMITH

Terry Smith was born in the UK in 1956. He gained a BA Hons at Goldsmiths School of Art. (1974–1978) and an MA in Fine Art from Birmingham Polytechnic (1984–1985).

He has been awarded numerous prizes and fellowships including an Arts Council Award (1997), the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award (2008), the Henry Moore Fellowship at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London (1998) and the Sargent Fellowship at The British School of Rome (1998/1999). He was Artist in Residence at the Field Institute, Dusseldorf (2002) and WASPS Studio, Glasgow (2003). From 2008–2010 he was the Drawing Fellow at Wimbledon School of Art and is currently on the High North Residency, Tromsø, Norway 2014 -2015.

Smith’s varied practice includes architectural interventions, drawing, film and live performance works, including Broken Voices Riverside Studios, London (2007); Hide and Seek Foundling Museum, London (2009); Combine V22 Space, London; and Foundlings at the Hunt Kasner Gallery, Prague and Ca’ Pesaro Museo Internazionale d’Arte Moderna, Venice (2014).

Smith has had numerous solo exhibitions including The British Museum (1995); Kombirama, Zurich (1996); Konstantin Adamopoulos. Frankfurt (1998); Buddle Arts Centre.,Tyneside (1998); Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Carrillo Gil, Mexico City (1999); LUX Gallery, London (2000); Peacocks Visual Arts, Aberdeen (2004); Venice Biennale (2007); the Foundling Museum, London (2008) and the Drawing Center, New York in 2013. He exhibited STRIP, a solo show at the Eagle Gallery in 1997, and was co-curator of In Focus, at the Eagle Gallery in 2005.

Smith’s work is held in collections including the British Museum; Museo de Bellas Artes. Caracas. Venezuela; Werner H Kramarsky Collection, New York; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Carrillo Gil, Mexico City; and John Walters Collection, Yale University, USA. His artists’ books are held by Yale Center for British Art, USA; New York Public Library; Museum Angewande Kunst, Vienna; Hochschule, Vienna; Tate Gallery Library; British Council; The Victoria and Albert Museum; University College London; Chelsea College of Art and Design; Manchester Metropolitan University Library; University of Westminster; and University Cardiff Library.
