BASIL BEATTIE PAINTINGS
IAN TYSON SCULPTURE
1 December 2006 - 19 January 2007
The Eagle Gallery is delighted to be hosting a joint exhibition by two
distinguished British artists in a show that combines painting and sculpture.
Basil Beattie shows a new series of small scale diptych canvases that
employ his familiar motifs of perspectival 'thresholds': tunnels, steps
and diagonals. The new paintings show a heightened use of colour in
the work which has become more apparent in the last two years and the
paintings play with spatial sensations across the divide of the two
supports.
Beattie is featured in a solo display at Tate Britain in March - June
2007 and the Eagle Gallery is producing a short film (with the kind
support of Peter and Maria Kellner, directed by Emma Hindley) for the
occasion.
Ian Tyson shows a series of four maquettes, which were developed towards
a major sculpture commission for UEA, which was installed in July 2006.
Proximity was commissioned in memory of the distinguished philosopher
Ilham Dilman by his wife Anne. The striking, minimal tubular steel work
is sited on open parkland by the Sainsbury Centre and Norfolk Terrace,
referencing the lines of the Lasdun Foster building it stands beside.
