DENISE DE CORDOVA
The Eagle Gallery first solo exhibition with Denise de Cordova presents a series of recent scultpures, which she has grouped under the title Re-Reader. De Cordova works are fascinating and their meanings are elusive. She describes her scultpures as "fictional heaps of nature studies" - references that are taken from the real world and re-made at different scales and presented in particular relationships with each other. The tableaux of objects are faithfully represented - birds are anatomically correct, boulders and rocks show the striations and fissures of their natural surfaces. The disconcerting ambiguity of de Cordova's work relies on an accurate,
detailed rendering of nature that is distorted. Artist's statement, 2007
Gallery news: James Fisher's painting "I Live in Fear" has recently been
acquired by The Jerwood Foundation for their permanent collection, following
its inclusion in the exhibition "Cities and Eyes" curated
by Emma Hill for Aldeburgh Music 2007. Terry Smith is showing a video and sound work from his project "Broken
Voices" as part of the exhibition "Triple Echo" at the
De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea from 29 September to January 2008. |
