DENISE DE CORDOVA
Re- Reader
13 September - 6 October 2007

The Eagle Gallery first solo exhibition with Denise de Cordova presents a series of recent scultpures, which she has grouped under the title Re-Reader. De Cordova works are fascinating and their meanings are elusive.

She describes her scultpures as "fictional heaps of nature studies" - references that are taken from the real world and re-made at different scales and presented in particular relationships with each other. The tableaux of objects are faithfully represented - birds are anatomically correct, boulders and rocks show the striations and fissures of their natural surfaces.

The disconcerting ambiguity of de Cordova's work relies on an accurate, detailed rendering of nature that is distorted.

"The pleasure of re-reading is that you can dispense with "plot" to some extent. As you know what is going to happen, you can concentrate on other things: structure, language, recurrent motifs. You walk the space of a book in a different way, becoming a collector of images. I like to find the ouzels, lapwings and redwings in the Brontë's and Henning Mankell. Sometimes references are concrete, a particular detail, other references are more generic - conflating and mingling different thoughts and stories.
The groups of objects are both scenes and summaries...Painted fictions, illusions."
