DOUBLETAKE
Denise de Cordova and Peter Rasmussen
27 November - 19 December 2009
Doubletake brings together two of the Eagle Gallery's represented artists
in an exhibition that explores how we read visual forms and images.
Denise de Cordova's sculptures play with scale and materiality, faithfully
reproducing in paint details of the texture and plumage of oversized
birds. Peter Rasmussen presents sequences of images ranging from abstract
to figurative, which are concerned with the layering and juxtaposition
of different kinds of marks, often combining directly painted and printed
passages on the surfaces of his works on paper and canvas. Both artists'
work presents the viewer with a series of dualities where illusion is
acknowledged and played upon. The powerful ambiguity of De Cordova's
sculpture relies on an accurate, detailed rendering of nature that is
distorted, while Rasmussen's images have the quality of arrested film
stills which hint at narratives but which are primarily concerned with
arrested moments in the process of making.
Denise de Cordova trained at Brighton Polytechnic and the Royal College
of Art, London. She has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and
has had solo shows at the Showroom, London and Flowers East, London,
amongst others.
Peter Rasmussen studied at Chelsea College of Art, graduating in 1977.
He has exhibited in many group exhibitions in the UK, Denmark and Germany
and has had over ten solo shows since 1991, including Galerie Eiswurfel,
Berlin (2004) and the Eagle Gallery. London (2006).
