FIEROZA DOORSEN

Recent Work
11 October - 3 November 2007

Fieroza Doorsen's first solo exhibition with the Eagle Gallery presents a recent series of mixed media canvases, works on paper and large scale floor and wall based sculptures.

Doorsen's working methods share affinities with the traditions of Arte Povera. Using materials ranging from found paper, wire and wax she develops the pieces through a process of wrapping, binding and layering, without prescriptive starting points.
Objects of subtle and poetic beauty emerge from this laborious process. Repetitions of fragmented text and organic form draw the viewer into a visual language that evokes both the formal matrices of classical abstraction, whilst also revealing undercurrents of more figurative imagery. Magazine photographs are simultaneously obscured and revealed by small wax dots, while strips of cut and intricately collaged newsprint begin to resemble computer data or nuanced surfaces one would associate with paint on canvas.
The most recent sculptures are built around organic forms of wire mesh over which layers of paper have been assembled in delicately modulated shifts of colour. These three dimensional forms resemble giant seed pods or the nucleoids of DNA, ultimately however, they exist on a level where definitions are suspended in favour of open ended interpretations.

Fieroza Doorsen trained at Ravensbourne College of Art and completed an MA at Chelsea College of Art in 1985. Her last solo exhibition was held at the Kenny Goss Gallery, Texas in 2006.

Doorsen has exhibited widely internationally since 1981 and has been shown in a number of recent group exhibitions in London, including “If it didn't exist, you'd have to invent it” at the Showroom, London; “20 X 5 Drawings” at the Eagle Gallery and “By Hand” at the Hales Gallery, London.
