James Fisher trained at the Royal College of Art and was a recipient of an Abbey Scholarship at the British School in Rome in 2001. The concurrent exhibitions provide an opportunity to see a body of work made over the last three years by a young artist whose work is gaining increased critical attention. Fishers highly worked, intensely decorative images combine visual references to anthropology, natural history, folklore and literature, worked into a many layered picture surface. Single or combined motifs hover at particular points within the images - kimonos, ships, figures, moths, are used like artefacts pinned into surfaces which are eroded or obscured. Recent reviews place Fisher amongst a group of contemporary painters whose works assert the vitality of exploration into the power of the strictly visual... (Corinna Lotz, Galleries Jan 2005) and reflect a philosophical and emotional engagement ... filtered through an original visual intelligence. (Sue Hubbard, Independent, 17.01.05).
