JAMES FISHER
‘& other recollections’

3 March - 1 April 2005

The Eagle Gallery is delighted to announce James Fisher’s first solo painting exhibition in London ‘& other recollections’ which runs with an associated show ‘The Wanderer’ at the Rochester Art Gallery.

James Fisher trained at the Royal College of Art and was a recipient of an Abbey Scholarship at the British School in Rome in 2001. The concurrent exhibitions provide an opportunity to see a body of work made over the last three years by a young artist whose work is gaining increased critical attention.

Fisher’s highly worked, intensely decorative images combine visual references to anthropology, natural history, folklore and literature, worked into a many layered picture surface. Single or combined motifs hover at particular points within the images - kimonos, ships, figures, moths, are used like artefacts ‘pinned’ into surfaces which are eroded or obscured.

Recent reviews place Fisher amongst a group of contemporary painters whose works ‘assert the vitality of exploration into the power of the strictly visual...’ (Corinna Lotz, Galleries Jan 2005) and reflect ‘a philosophical and emotional engagement ... filtered through an original visual intelligence.’ (Sue Hubbard, Independent, 17.01.05).
