Matthew Burrows: Up Down
25 October - 24 November 2006

The Eagle Gallery is delighted to be hosting our second solo exhibition with Matthew Burrows featuring new paintings from a body of work entitled Up Down.
Burrows was recently a prize winner in this year's John Moores 24 Liverpool Exhibition and his forthcoming show confirms him as one of the UK's most talented young painters. The exhibition develops previous themes in Burrows' work, which has explored faith, belief systems and myth.

Up Down is a Utopian place - a world where perfection is the governing ethos.
It is the 'no place' of the imagination, a world created by the artifice of painting that paradoxically tells us things about the reality in which we live. Burrows depicts the architecture and people of Up Down as bound within a strict and ascendant hierarchy, inhabiting cities which resemble a children's playground, strictly forbidden ever to touch the earth. The paintings hang as an inter related collection of images, ranging from tiny studies of the flora and fauna of Up Down, to portraits of it's inhabitants and large scale panoramic landscapes.
