PRINTS / PUBLICATIONS
Basil Beattie, Jane Bustin, Jane Joseph

14 December 2007 - 25 January 2008

The Eagle Gallery's EMH Arts imprint has published over twenty artist's book works since it was established in 1991. Each of these commissions have been collaborations between contemporary artists and writers and have utilised the expertise of print and letterpress studios across the UK.

In the past two years we have extended the imprint to include artist's prints and folio works and our forthcoming exhibition launches a series of new publications ranging from editioned prints to monotypes and folio works that combine image and text.
The show launches a suite of new etchings by Basil Beattie, monoprints by Jane Bustin and two new collaborative publications by Jane Joseph: Seeds and Fruits with Mel Gooding and Kinderszenen with Anthony Rudolf.

Basil Beattie has made prints for over twenty-five years, alongside his practice as a painter.
His previous graphics have been mainly in the media of lithographic monoprints and screenprints and this new series of images Above & Below I - IV are the first editioned etchings to have been published to date.

Jane Bustin's Wake series are monoprints worked from etching plates. The images are layered with ink in a process akin to painting, before they are passed through the press. The subtly coloured, minimal images bear the trace of an aquatint in their surface and have achieved in print the resonance of Bustin's most recent paintings.

Seeds and Fruits with drypoints by Jane Joseph and text by Mel Gooding, is a companion publication to an earlier bookwork A Little Flora of Common Plants which was published by the Gallery in 2002 and is now held in many museum collections including the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Yale Center for British Art, USA. Both
editions record and celebrate common wild plants found in the UK.

Kinderszenen is a collaboration between Jane Joseph and the poet Anthony Rudolf and is based on the titles of Robert Schuman's thirteen piano pieces for his wife Clara Wieck (Scenes from Childhood). As in the music, poet and artist explore the theme of an adult recollection of childhood. Joseph has chosen to make the images by lino-cut, utilising the simplicity of the media, which are counterpoised by a poem by Anthony Rudolf, printed letterpress.
