ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS

EAGLE GALLERY CABINET ROOM

In September 2020 Emma Hill opens a new viewing room at the Eagle PH, with the launch of Hormazd Narielwalla’s Rock, Paper, Scissors – the first in a series of project-led exhibitions.

The Eagle Gallery Cabinet Room will host monthly installations focussing on small-scale original works and artist book publications. Open Wednesday – Friday 11 – 6, Saturday 11 – 4, and by appointment.

Rock, Paper, Scissors is a response to the sculpture of Barbara Hepworth and to the particular experience of works that are sited in her garden at St. Ives. A series of 100 tiny paper collages, created on the pages of a found vintage pattern manual, explore ideas about materiality, journeying and space. Published in an edition of 100 copies, an artist’s book reassembles the original collage sequence, housed in a box that pays reference to Hepworth’s signature pierced forms.

An installation of the original collages and the artist’s book will be on display through-out September, together with new print works developed from Narielwalla’s recent series Supernova.

Narielwalla (b. 1979, Mumbai) is a London-based artist whose work has been shown in solo exhibitions with Paul Smith and the South Bank Centre. In 2011 he was commissioned by the Crafts Council for the touring exhibition Block Party and in 2018 the V&A published four of his prints to accompany Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up. His work Bands of Pride has recently been acquired by the Ben Uri Society and is the first work by an Indian émigré artist to enter their collection. Rock, Paper, Scissors is published under the EMH Arts imprint, which commissions contemporary artists and writers to work collaboratively. Works from the EMH Arts imprint are held in collections including the British Library, the British Museum, the Guttenberg Museum, the Imperial War Museum, New York Public Library, RHS Library, TATE, V&A, and the Yale Center for British Art.

Rock, Paper, Scissors is open from 9 September – 2 October 2020

The artist’s book is offered at the pre-publication price of £185 for orders received by 31 August.
